CONSTRUCTION OF A ROAD LINK BETWEEN THE SS 264 AND VIA GALATINA

The project involves the construction of a road link between the SS 264 and the SP Galatina near the existing bridge over the Volturno River, in the municipalities of Pontelatone and Capua (CE), approximately 550 meters upstream from the Ponte Annibale crossing road. The need for a new connection arose from the urgency to resolve traffic flow issues in this highly trafficked node, with the goal of diverting much of the related traffic; an important aspect is also the idea of a new tube bridge for both road traffic and the agricultural water pipeline.

The design result consists of a steel deck with a single span, supported by the existing abutment (on the right hydraulic side of the existing tube bridge) and a newly built portal pier, P1b, which consists of 4 longitudinal beams, with varying heights from a maximum of 2400 mm in the central part to a minimum of 1600 mm at the supports, with solid steel head cross-members. Road safety has been integrated through the creation of sound strips to alert drivers, encouraging them to reduce their speed, and the creation of fictitious altitude transitions to maintain safety visibility while artificially limiting the driver’s field of vision, which reduces the virtual perception of obstacles, effectively slowing down traffic speeds. Additional issues arise from the need to restore environmental corridors to facilitate the movement of livestock to the many livestock farms in the area. This includes scheduling work stoppages and detour routes around the construction sites, as well as measures to limit speed on existing road sections near the construction zones.
